There are two streams called River Styx in Florida. This is the one in the Panhandle, running out of the Apalachicola National Forest into the Apalachicola River.

Snake!
I’ve been hoping to get a good shot of one all summer and I finally got a chance last week. It crawled past my foot, nearly giving me a heart attack, before retreating to the edge of a log to curl up and rattle and glare, but it never tried to strike.
A nice walk in the woods.
Just in case you thought Florida was all sandy beaches, here’s a photo taken on one of last week’s transects. The trees are live oaks; the shrubs are saw palmetto; the green stuff on the creek bank is some kind of moss; and the straight white streak in the foreground is my distance-measuring string.
I’m having a lazy day.
